Celebrating spring and poetry

By Carol / April 12, 2013 /

Does spring inspire you to write poetry?  April is National Poetry Month and we are finally seeing the signs of spring here in Iowa. In honor of both, here’s a poem I wrote. An homage to William Carlos Williams.

Prairie, GranddaughtersThe Brown Prairie

so much depends
upon

a brown spring
prairie

beaten down by
winter

through a child’s
eyes

I wrote this poem in response to the prompt “so much depends upon.”  If you’d like to respond, in poem form or otherwise, I’d love to know what images that prompt – or the green grass and flowers of spring – trigger for you.

light of love sparkles in eyes of beholder
green of freshness wears colors of newness
oh there is spring to uphold bounty of beauty
yet frost is no more to bite on lips of green.

eyes of dawn resonates to burn in gold
vale of tune seems to unveil flames of fire
law of attraction is art ripple flowing quietly
instinct impulses to pursue rungs of rose

    Here’s my poem:

    SO MUCH DEPENDS UPON
    Veronica Arnold
    4/13/13

    So much depends upon
    A glance,
    A smile,
    A word.
A life can change in an instant
    From bored
    To smile
    To dance
When one person takes the time to care.

So true, Veronica. And what an inspiring reminder! Thank you.

I know this is supposed to be about spring–of course it IS about a typical Colorado spring, a time when we get big snowstorms! Here’s another “So Much Depends Upon” poem:

    So much depends upon
    A single snowflake
    Upon another.
    Branches minutely etched against the sky;
    A bustling city brought to its knees;
    Unknown neighbors shoveling out cars
    Together;
Children sledding in the parking lot:
    Where did they come from?
The power of a single snowflake
    Upon another.

Another lovely reminder of the value of all of us together. In light of the Boston Marathon attack, that was horrible but that brought so many people running toward the explosions to help, it is especially meaningful. Thanks for writing a second poem!

    CURVE OF CONSCIOUSNESS

Heart seems to ruffle when unrequited of red
Leaf of pine desiccates being chilled of snow
Thunder rips through lurid void of emptiness
Soul seems to tear as when disowned of love.

Serenity lays unshaken on curve of consciousness
As Cosmic blue weaves to form web of eternity
Silence dissipates untangled in abstruse void
By firmament stars and meteors yet reverberates.

from beneath oak i stand and stare to cosmic blue
lest i may decipher code of quest to define
hasty rain drops and quandary of falling dew
on veneration i slowly succumb to ire inevitable.
